The teachers from the Teachers’ Association “Dositej Obradovic” created this site for students and and all those who want to find out more about the area of present-day Kosovo and Metohija. This site is also created for the people who wish to preserve the memory of, and love for KosMet’s history, tradition and culture.

In history, the territory of Kosovo and Metohija has been populated from the ancient times. The Palaeolithic, the Neolithic, and the Ancient World left lasting marks on this area. The museums and books bear witness to this claim. Althouth the centres of the antique cultures of Greece and Rome were far away, their influence spread into the interior of the Balkans, leaving numerous monuments of Roman and early Byzantine culture behind.

In the Middle Ages Serbs arrive into these parts and start forming their states. At one time Serbian state takes the leading role in the region. The Nemanjica State is the most significant Serbian state in the Middle Ages judging by its heritage to the Serbian people. Numerous cultural monuments bear witness to these times. They are a true treasure trove of spiritual heritage of the Serbian nation.

With the expansion of Turkey Islamic influence made itself felt, and its state existed until the Balcan Wars. The decline and disapperance of the Serbian medieval state happened across this region. From the south the centre of Serbia shifts towards the Danube and thus the Turkish state expanded towards the north, over Kosovo and Metohia of today.

The events which enabled the restoration of the Serbian state in the new century happened outside the today’s Kosovo and Metohia which belonged to the Turkish Empire. The ideas of the restoration of the Serbian state included its spreading over the medieval areas and areas populated with Serbs.

All the world wars and influence of the axes will be felt here to this day. The creation of Yugoslavia will open new issues, in the state and in the society. Albania, which was created after the Balkanic Wars was the neighbour of the new state.

The recognisable folklore is handed down from generation to generation as a heritage. The folk musical tradition represents a part of the everyday life of the Serbian people which over centuries develops through the song and folk customs. National dishes (cuisine) are recognisable, the crafts which were developed from the ancient times, also children’s games which are recorded.

The richest heritage of the past is the written word. The folk epic poetry was inspired by the Battle of Kosovo, and the artistic poetry by the folk tradition and aspiration to keep cradle of the Serbian state safe from oblivion.

Peony is a plant (a flower) which has a symbolic significance for Kosmet. Here we can find numerous protected kinds of fauna and flora. This is an appeal to people who live in today’s Kosmet to protect and preserve the nature as an important resource for the future.

You can find out about geographical characteristics of the area through geography. Two geographical regions stand out: Kosovo depression and Metohia Depression, where you can find the largest towns of this region.
